hen opportunity knocks, Matty’s Closet helps students open the door.
A free professional clothing resource and program of the CSUN Career Center, Matty’s Closet makes clothing and accessories available for interviews, internships, conferences and fledgling careers. Students can select one free outfit per semester, and the ensembles are theirs to keep.
In January, Matty’s Closet debuted its new digs in the Valera NEST basic needs suite, welcoming more students than ever before to its centralized University Student Union location. Some of the best features of the new space: location, a full stock of inventory and spacious fitting rooms!
Matty’s Closet offers one-on-one styling, where student stylists help their peers find their best fit and style — using color palette analysis to explain the different elements of a professional outfit. For example, students might be encouraged to try navy blue or another neutral color, rather than an all-black outfit.
“Matty’s Closet is driven by generous donations from the community, staff and even other students,” said Kim Morales, career readiness specialist and career counselor for the Career Center. “We have different ways to donate, including donation boxes around campus, an Amazon wish list and a donation pledge. Items [in] high demand include blazers and professional shirts and tops.
“The new space at the Valera NEST has allowed Matty’s Closet to be a lot more accessible and visible,” Morales said. “Our student visits have increased due to the more centralized location.”
In February, CSUN Magazine visited the new space and picked up some professional wardrobe tips from student stylist James Hawkins, a senior animation major, as he helped several students select their best fit.
